Willie Mae was born to the late John Ballinger, Sr. and Millie Horn Ballinger on August 16, 1909 in Bleakwood, Texas (Newton County). The sawmill community had one post office, two general stores, and a railroad.

She was the 7th (youngest) girl of fourteen children. Her parents named her Willie Mae. All sisters and brothers have preceded her in entering Heaven. Her sisters: Zennie, Sendie, Aggie, Minnie, Bertha, and Pasty. Her brothers: George, Jim, Joe, John, JR., Buster, Ted, and Ned.

She married the late Alex Johnson, Jr. on May 14, 1955. He preceded her in entering Heaven on February 18, 1980 at the age of 75.

Willie Mae joined First Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in 1955 under the late Pastor Alfred. Sometime in the 1960’s she changed her membership to First Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor T.T. Bradford and other ministers. She maintained an active role on the usher board until her health and age prevented her from marching. In 2003, she moved her membership to Charity Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Burnis Burnside.

Willie Mae moved in with her daughter and son in law in December 1984 to help care for her granddaughter, Arnecia. All the family called her “Granny”.
Granny instilled a strong constitution for her daughter and grandchildren to obtain the education that she was not able to attain as a child. In the early 1900’s a school year consisted of four months of schooling with only one book. The other eight months the children worked.

She leaves Gayle McGlory (daughter), Wesley McGlory (Son-in-law), Arnecia Chere McGlory (granddaughter), and Wesley Alan McGlory (grandson), and a host of relatives and friends.
